Crime writer Solveig Karlsdottir is pretty successful - although that's not particularly easy in Iceland. After all, with only two murders a year in the entire country, there aren't many sources of inspiration, but she makes up for this with a lot of imagination and her special feeling for things that aren't quite right. And this feeling kicks in strongly when she travels from Reykjavik to her old home village to look after her mother Margret, who is suffering from dementia. When an old friend from her youth is found dead at the harbor, she doesn't believe the official conclusion that it was an accident.

Loosing a bit from her fellow-angler uncle, he gives a shot as unpaid apprentice to freshly-graduated gypsy Marcia Amaya, whom nobody would consider hiring so far, but is soon offered crossing to the office of Silva's successor as prosecutor. Their first client is common-as-muck Joana Soares, accused of murdering her beached-up husband after a public fight, without an alibi, claiming a blackout. Eduardo is countered while working out, with help from Marcia's and Joana's families, how the affair actually relates to illegal trade in medicine, with twists including the involvement of a crime lord.

Jan Hinrichs is an experienced ship and salvage inspector. After the bankruptcy of his last employer, however, he is not above working as a simple diver. The widower has two children to support and soon a third eater is on board, as his daughter Lena is pregnant. The only problem is that Hinrichs is 55 and, in the eyes of the shipowners, too old for this job that requires bones and fitness. And so he pretends to be 10 years younger at a job interview. He falsifies his diving book and gets himself a fake passport. The world wants to be deceived. Now things are suddenly working out: Hinrichs does his job, he does it well and his boss is happy with him - for the time being.
